Key Takeaways

  • Airbnb gives hosts and guests 14 days after checkout to submit a review
  • Reviews appear after both sides respond or when the 14-day window ends
  • Ratings, cancellations, pricing and responsiveness can all influence listing visibility

Airbnb reviews may look simple on the surface, but the system behind those stars plays an important role in shaping where guests book and how hosts build trust on the platform.

Airbnb uses a double-blind, two-way review system that allows hosts and guests to review one another without seeing the other person’s feedback before submitting their own.

Both sides have 14 days after checkout to leave a review.

The feedback becomes visible after both reviews have been submitted or when the 14-day window closes, whichever comes first.

“Airbnb’s review system is designed to build trust within our community,” Airbnb told REWire Media in a statement. “Our double-blind, two-way model helps encourage honest reviews.”

The company said the overwhelming majority of stays take place without an issue and that listings across the platform have an average rating of 4.79.

Reviews must be connected to an actual booking and follow Airbnb policies covering authenticity, relevance, retaliation, bias and prohibited content.

A Hostfully guide to the booking platform’s review process, published earlier this month, walks hosts through how the system works, including the submission window, star ratings and the circumstances under which a review may be disputed.

Guests can rate a stay across several categories, including cleanliness, accuracy, check-in, communication, location and value.

That feedback gives future travelers more information before booking and can also help hosts identify areas where a listing or guest experience may need attention.

According to Hostfully’s review, the averages sit in a compressed band where small differences can matter. Roughly 96% of listings hold at least 4 stars and 86% hold 4.5 or higher, meaning a 4.6 rating that sounds excellent in the abstract may actually fall below the marketplace’s center of gravity.

“The thresholds that matter are 4.8 for Superhost and roughly 4.9 with strong sub-scores for the Guest Favorites badge, which Airbnb awards per listing,” Hostfully added.

Airbnb said users who receive lower ratings may receive educational support through automated messages, personalized suggestions and tools that highlight listing concerns.

The help is out there for hosts who ask.

The platform wants its hosts to succeed, not the other way around.

Suggestions may be as simple as updating check-in instructions, improving listing photos, or reviewing complaints through Airbnb’s Listing Issues dashboard.

When Airbnb identifies a pattern of quality concerns using signals such as ratings, cancellations and customer support reports, the company may issue warnings or temporarily pause a listing while a host reviews the platform’s ground rules. More serious or persistent cases may result in removal.

Reviews are one part of Airbnb search

Ratings can contribute to how guests view a listing, but they are not the only factor that determines what appears in Airbnb search results.

Airbnb says these results are shaped first by what each guest searches for, including location, travel dates, price, amenities, property category, and booking preferences.

The ranking system also considers listing availability, pricing, flexibility, quality, host responsiveness and host cancellations while providing guests with a range of options.

Airbnb generally does not mediate disagreements over whether a review is accurate.

“If a user feels a review violates our policies, they can dispute it, and we take this and the removal of any review seriously,” the company said.

Hosts and guests can respond publicly to add context or explain why they disagree.

Users may also dispute reviews they believe violate Airbnb’s policies.

Reviews may be removed in limited circumstances, including when they contain prohibited content or are unrelated to the stay.

For hosts, the system creates a steady stream of feedback that can help shape listing updates, improve guest communication and support a more consistent stay from one booking to the next.
