The trend is tied to shorter getaways close to home, with Airbnb data showing nearly 80 percent of travelers find short trips less stressful and more enjoyable than longer breaks.
Almost half of working Australians said a two-to-three-hour drive is enough to switch off and recharge.
The top-saved listings for international travelers point to a clear theme. Guests are looking for nature, quiet and something that feels different from a standard rental.
Airbnb said tiny homes, transparent domes, bubble stays, outdoor baths and hot tubs all showed up strongly among the most wishlisted properties. Meanwhile, rural and off-grid homes also ranked high, with words like “rainforest” and “seclusion” appearing often across top listings.
Susan Wheeldon, Airbnb’s country manager for Australia and New Zealand, said the trend shows travelers are looking for “regular moments of escape” rather than only planning big overseas trips.
“Weekending signals a shift in what Australians are looking for from travel. It’s less about planning big, overseas holidays and more about building regular moments of escape from everyday life,” Wheeldon said in a press release.
“The destinations and homes that are featuring on people’s Wishlists reflect a desire for digital detox and local travel. As people look for ways to disconnect and reset, the homes featured in the Most Wishlisted Airbnbs for 2026 point to a desire for nature-led stays, from tiny homes to off-grid retreats, that offer various options for those looking for a chance to reset,” she added.
