Key Takeaways

  • Airbnb has launched hotel listings in more than 20 destinations, focusing on boutique and independent properties.
  • 55% of guests who book a hotel on Airbnb return to book a home, making hotels a demand engine for the wider platform.
  • STR operators in supply-constrained cities face new in-platform competition as Airbnb scales its hotel supply with a dedicated VP hire.

Airbnb built its name by giving travelers an alternative to hotels. Now it wants a piece of the hotel business, too.

Nearly 18 years after the company started with air mattresses in a San Francisco apartment, the booking giant is quietly making independent hotels bookable in some cities.

It’s a major shift for a brand that spent years positioning itself against traditional lodging, and it could mark one of the company’s biggest strategy changes yet —if the test becomes permanent, that is.

In October, Airbnb launched a pilot in New York, Los Angeles, and Madrid seeking supply “across chains, independents and a variety of key brands.”

The move was an experiment – first mentioned on a Q3 2025 earnings call – in redefining how hotels are presented, discovered, and booked on Airbnb, as part of a much larger strategy to make the platform a full-service travel ecosystem.

According to an FTN News report, Airbnb has already launched hotel listings in more than 20 destinations worldwide, with a deliberate focus on independent and boutique-style properties rather than large international chains.

The company has also added short-term rental market-adjacent services — car rentals, restaurant discovery, grocery delivery, and attractions — in what it describes as a push to become a full travel ecosystem.

What Airbnb’s hotel push means for STR operators

Airbnb’s rival Booking.com has long dominated the hotel distribution space, and the company may be now moving onto that ground directly.

The company recently appointed Andrea D’Amico, a Booking.com veteran who spent 18 years there including as VP and Managing Director of EMEA overseeing 1,500 employees across 90 offices, as its new VP of Hotels.

Early numbers from the hotel pilot are telling, with approximately 55% of guests who book a hotel on Airbnb returning to book a home, making hotel listings a demand flywheel for the broader platform.

For hosts, the competitive stakes are real.

Boutique hotels now compete directly for the same travel platform placement that STR operators once had to themselves on Airbnb.
