Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky expects India to become one of the company’s largest global markets, with 80 percent of business already being driven by domestic travel.

Speaking to PTI at Airbnb headquarters, Chesky said Airbnb has a long-term plan for India, with plans to grow its presence among domestic travelers, according to Devdiscourse.

”My approach in India is to play the long game, to really invest in the country, to invest in the community, and let everyone in India know that Airbnb’s here to stay. It’s one of the (markets) I’m most focused on,” Chesky said. “It’s one of those I expect to grow the fastest. And I think one day it will be one of the biggest markets in the world on Airbnb.”

The company is betting on travel-hungry Gen Z population as a major driver of growth in India.

”We index very highly with Gen Z… and India’s got a very large Gen Z population,” he said.

“I don’t think many young people in India are as predisposed to travelling (staying) in a hotel the traditional way,” he added, noting, “I think it’s going to be a major part of our story for the next 10-20 years.”

The India push aligns with Airbnb’s broader strategy to evolve from a home-sharing platform into a one-stop travel shop, rolling out services including in-app car rentals, grocery deliveries, airport pickups, and luggage storage.

These features, currently live in select global cities, will reach the Indian market in the near future.

Chesky remains bullish on the global travel industry despite geopolitical conflicts and economic shifts, noting it has reached a post-pandemic equilibrium.

Operators expanding into emerging markets should watch whether major platforms follow Airbnb’s lead and prioritize domestic travel infrastructure in high-growth regions.
