Key Takeaways
- A Georgia fugitive wanted on multiple warrants was arrested at an Airbnb in The Villages this week
- The arrest marks the second short-term rental-linked incident reported in The Villages within a month
- Community Development District supervisors say they lack authority to restrict short-term rentals despite ongoing resident complaints
A fugitive wanted on multiple warrants in Georgia was arrested this week inside an Airbnb rental in The Villages, Florida, the sprawling retirement community that has become a flashpoint in the debate over short-term rental regulation statewide.
The man had been staying at a villa in the Fussell Villas neighborhood, in the Village of St. Catherine, after reportedly moving his ex-girlfriend and their child into the rental following a breakup. Villages-News.com reported that Wildwood police were called to the property after a dispute erupted over the woman FaceTiming another man, and officers determined he was wanted on multiple Georgia warrants.
He was booked without bond at the Sumter County Detention Center and is pending extradition. The arrest is the second Airbnb-related incident to hit local headlines in a month. Last month an Indiana woman was arrested on a drunk driving charge in The Villages after getting lost in a golf cart, having admitted she left her 14-year-old daughter alone in an Airbnb rental while she was out drinking.
Complaints pile up as short-term rentals proliferate
Residents in The Villages have repeatedly raised concerns with Community Development District supervisors over noise, parking, drinking and trash tied to short-term rentals cycling through their neighborhoods.
Absentee operators renting through Airbnb and VRBO frequently skip screening tenants or briefing them on community rules, a gap that has fueled resentment among full-time residents.

District supervisors say they have heard from residents repeatedly on the issue but lack the authority to restrict short-term rentals directly. The community has not set a timeline for any new enforcement measures, leaving the same regulatory gap in place after this week’s arrest.
Another short-term rental arrest adds fuel to the debate
The opinion piece was published around the same time another short-term rental arrest was making headlines in The Villages.
On Aug. 5, Villages-News.com reported that a man wanted on multiple warrants in Georgia was arrested after police responded to a domestic disturbance at an STR in the Village of St. Catherine. Police said the man had been staying at the rental with his ex-girlfriend and their child before officers discovered the outstanding warrants.
The outlet also pointed to a separate July incident involving a 44-year-old Indiana woman who was arrested on a drunk driving charge after getting lost in a golf cart. She told police she had left her 14-year-old daughter alone at a short-term rental in The Villages.
