Three people were shot at a short-term rental house party in Louisville, Kentucky — and now the property owners are on the record trying to explain themselves.
According to a WAVE News report, Louisville Metro Police responded to an incident on East Washington Street just before 1:10 a.m. on June 22 after reports of a shooting.
After responding, officers found a man with a gunshot wound to the leg.
The investigation later confirmed that three people in total had been shot during the party.
All three were transported to University of Louisville Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said, and LMPD’s Non-Fatal Shooting Squad is now investigating.
What the Butchertown shooting means for STR operators
The owners’ decision to publicly respond puts a face on the liability exposure that comes with every booking.

After the incident, Metro Councilman Ken Herndon (D-4) who represents areas that include Butchertown, NuLu, and downtown, said one-night parties at short-term rentals can be an issue.
“I’ve begun talking with the county attorney to look into ways that we might dissuade single night party rentals,” Herndon said. “And I haven’t gotten to the details yet, but I’d like to discuss maybe having a two-night minimum required of AirBnB, so that would keep the one-nighters from wanting to do that, or cost them more money to do so. It perhaps would dissuade sometimes when people just want to rent it for a party house,” per local ABC affiliate “WHAS 11 News.”
It’s a scenario party-related STR crackdowns are designed to prevent — and one that regulators across the country cite when pushing for tighter oversight.
Platforms like Airbnb maintain strict anti-party policies, but enforcement ultimately lands on the host once something goes wrong.

Louisville has seen this before.
A May 2026 party at a separate short-term rental in the nearby Paristown Pointe neighborhood ended with a shooting and a 12-hour power outage after a bullet struck an electrical cable.
That separate incident sent neighbors to city hall demanding stronger STR enforcement.
The Butchertown shooting is the second violent short-term rental party incident in Louisville in roughly six weeks.
