Airbnb has committed over $1 million to build five soccer mini-pitches across New York and New Jersey.

The first groundbreaking ceremony was held on May 8 in the Bronx.

The investment comes as the platform prepares for approximately 25,000 guests expected to stay with its short-term rental hosts across the Tri-State area during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The project is part of Airbnb’s Host City Impact Program, a $5 million investment to support local communities during and after the tournament, according to the “US Soccer Foundation.”

“Projects like these are exactly what the World Cup is all about — creating meaningful opportunities in the communities that define our region,” said Alex Lasry, CEO, NYNJ FIFA World Cup 2026 Host Committee.

“These mini-pitches will help grow the game, expand access to play, and inspire the next generation of athletes in New York and New Jersey. By investing in neighborhoods across our region, we’re ensuring the impact of this tournament is felt far beyond the stadium and helping more young people connect with the world’s game.”

Organizers of the initiative are hoping the mini-pitches will leave a” meaningful and lasting impact on local communities in New York and New Jersey,” a press release said.

“At Airbnb, we’re committed not just with words, but action to make sure the World Cup’s impact is felt on local communities far beyond the tournament. The mini-pitches across New York and New Jersey help expand access to soccer to communities that may not otherwise have the opportunity to play,” said Janaye Ingram, Global Director of Community Partner Programs and Engagement for Airbnb.

“We’d like to thank the FIFA World Cup 2026™ New York New Jersey Host Committee, the U.S. Soccer Foundation and our partners in local government for their help in making these mini-pitches a reality. We hope that kids across the region will be able to enjoy it for many years and we look forward to their opening,” Ingram continued.

Additional pitches will be built at schools in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Irvington, New Jersey.

What the World Cup means for short-term rental hosts

Airbnb activity during the tournament is projected to generate $288 million in GDP and support over 1,100 full-time equivalent jobs through 2026.

The mini-pitches build on more than 50 similar facilities built across all five NYC boroughs since 2016, creating infrastructure that keeps STR visitors and platform hosts connected to local communities.
